Leadership is a function that steers the direction of nations, governments, businesses and families. Over the last 200 years, there have been many quotes and definitions on what leadership is.
In February 2014, I penned the following definition; Leadership is bringing people into new realms of excellence and challenging them to become distinguished in their chosen field.
My definition is short, sharp and simple but effective, exciting and edifying and to be fair, that’s what leadership should be about; people, excellence and direction.
The way you can tell a genuine leader from one who is a lover of title is their love for people. Not just a love for people, real leaders love to see people constantly raise the bar of excellence. The ‘worst’ leaders are the ones who are selfish and mediocre then try and lead people. I mean, if a person is mediocre, the only place they can lead people is to the comfort zone called average.
Leaders have to be honest with people and should always be ready to tell the truth, even if it puts the people they are leading out of place.
Serving and serving with excellence to people you speak, manage, teach or mentor is an essential component in leadership. The best leaders are the most ardent servants because they know leading and serving go ‘hand in hand’ like Facebook and Twitter.
As a leader, the quality of your work, wisdom and words is what will distinguish you as a leader who is in position and leading the field compared to a person who is fighting for position and not leading in any field.
Your distinction as a leader is what will separate you in a world of average and in turn cause you to become a reference point of excellence and hope to your generation.
I love a quote from John Maxwell who is one of the great modern day leaders; “everything rises and falls on leadership”.
